I really gave the Xbox One a grilling when it was announced, but taking several steps back looking at it compared to the PS4 here is what I can tell.
Hardware, I’m going to sum it up in terms I understand it PS4 has better hardware (up to 50% faster processing) but due to limitations of the developer will not make a noticeable difference in terms of visuals unless your playing on a cinema screen and is RAM heavy to deal with the lack of advanced software, Xbox has better Software and Cloud capabilities allowing for much improved AI (Up to 600% according to Forza creators turn 10 by using player data to direct AI responses) and allows large, dynamic constant worlds to operate seamlessly, Playstations cloud system will be launched in February-March for the purpose of game saves and allowing certain downloadable PS3 games to be played on PS4. Microsoft have 300,000 servers powering Cloud and dedicated servers for almost all games, while PlayStation have 15,000 which are outsourced, however both of them have OVER 9000!!!! servers.
The biggest item that people are underestimating is the Kinect 2.0, I know someone who has had test time with it and tells me that its nothing like the original in terms of performance and versatility, it has been announced that it costs almost as much as the One itself to produce so no expense spared on it, it can be used in small rooms only requiring meters of space to respond and has much improved motion systems which could be used to free up controller button space with interactive motions, I can also see some hilarious Skyping parties between players during casual games, it also acts as a mic and has a cleaver feature that calibrates to your voice and eliminates background sounds in addition to you being able to give in game commands such as marking a target in Battlefield and calling in missile barrages on peoples faces, and it doesn’t spy on you if you think it does you’re a moron, and now you can unplug it. Playstation Eye is required to use the Move function in the controller feature and operates like the Original Kinect but has 2 cameras to help it worth depth perception and detail which is something the Kinect struggled with, it will be available for £60 and has shown useful features such as taking pictures of you completing DriveClub challenge leaderboards for a sense of personal achievement or an opportunity for massive funny epicness and you pull obscure faces at the camera, it doesn't do voice commands
Games, well there are only 3 games you will need, Forza, Battlefield 4 and Destiny, 2 are multiplatform and Forza which beats Driveclub and does donuts around it just for fun is an exclusive to the One, these are the 3 that made me go wow, other details include that Battlefield 4 has priority DLC for Xbox, while Destiny has PS4 exclusive content. Cost, the PS4 is a real bargain and comes with 5, yes 5 not 4 or 6 5 free to play game already installed (Blacklight: Retribution, War Thunder, Warframe, DC Universe Online, PlanetSide 2) which don’t require PSN subscription as well, compared to the 2 Microsoft have (Project Spark Xbox's Kinect based little big planet attempt and Killer Instinct) that require Live subscription, its an amazing “pick up and play” package, both require subscriptions and come with monthly free arcade game content, both come with headsets instead the PS4 has an ear piece with a microphone while the Xbox uses the Kinect in addition to a headset which has a much higher quality of sound, headsets can be purchased at the usual official rip off prices but I think the PS4 can use a Bluetooth head set and the Xbox controllers design is not ideal for a weird mics as they require adaptors to be compatible with older tec or certain multi-console models.
I’m writing this because I am feed up of reading the B S from the media which saw the console war as an opportunity to gain ratings and hammer Microsoft for their failure to sell its product and it’s poorly implemented features which were then corrected only for the media to criticise them further saying how Microsoft backtracks on its decision. Speaking with people who have experience of the Consoles and networking experts I came to this conclusion.
My verdict is the Xbox One is better which is quite surprising, in the long term I believe the Xbox would be more adaptable and I would be willing to pay the extra for the Kinect 2.0 which even if it doesn’t contribute to my gaming experience much looks like it could give a lot of fun something that has been missing recently with games, both consoles are decent and suit different demands and incomes if you want to make fun of a console pick on the Wii U.
